Punjab-Haryana water dispute: Centre deploys CISF at Nangal Dam

BBMB has been instructed to complete all necessary arrangements, including accommodation, transportation, communication equipment, and security devices, to facilitate the CISF deployment.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the deployment of a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) unit to oversee security at the Bhakra Dam project in Nangal. This decision follows rising tensions between Punjab and Haryana over water allocation from the Nangal dam.

A total of 296 CISF posts have been created for the dam’s security wing, and a formal letter has been sent to the Director of Security and Consultancy at the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The board has been instructed to complete all necessary arrangements, including accommodation, transportation, communication equipment, and security devices, to facilitate the CISF deployment.

The move comes after the Punjab Police increased their presence near the dam, amid ongoing protests and disputes related to water release. Recently, BBMB chairman Manoj Tripathi was surrounded by protesters at the rest house while supervising the release of additional water to Haryana, intensifying the conflict.

This development coincides with celebrations by Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, which marked its success in preventing the release of extra water to Haryana. The neighbouring state had already exhausted its allocated water share for the September 2024 to May 2025 depletion period of the dam.

The deployment of the CISF aims to ensure peace and secure management of the crucial water infrastructure amid the simmering inter-state tensions.
