Punjab's Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, at the hospital where Dr. Anil Kamboj is admitted in Moga

Punjab’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, visited Moga’s Super Specialty Hospital on Saturday to enquire about the health of Dr. Anil Kamboj, father of popular Punjabi film actress Tania, who had been shot two days ago.

Assuring the family of “complete support” by the state government, the minister said the attack was “deeply unfortunate and inhuman” and that the perpetrators of the crime “would not be spared at any cost”.

“The Punjab government is committed to upholding law and order and will ensure exemplary punishment to the culprits,” he said.

Dr. Kamboj, who runs a clinic in Moga, was grievously injured on July 4 by two assailants disguised as patients, who opened fire at him from a close range. He has since been admitted to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Since the shooting was captured on a CCTV, police has been probing possible links to gangster Lakhbir Landa, who had been making extortion calls to the family.

It must be noted that police protection had been granted to Dr. Kamboj in light of threats by gangsters, but it was withdrawn some time ago. The incident has caused a furore in the state, with people protesting against the deteriorating law and order situation here.

Dr. Balbir said medical guidance had been sought virtually for Dr. Kamboj from renowned cardiologist Dr. Bishav Mohan, who worked at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana. A team of specialists from DMCH is also expected to join the team of doctors attending to Dr. Kamboj.

The minister said AAP’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, and Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann were closely monitoring Dr. Kamboj’s health condition.

Dr. Balbir said the Punjab government was taking robust steps, such as mapping hospitals with nearby police stations and forming district-level monitoring committees, to ensure the safety of medical professionals across the state.

“Anyone found misbehaving with healthcare staff will face strict action,” he added.
