Punjab Jails Minister Ravjot Singh on Saturday reviewed the functioning of the state prisons department and asked officials to take stronger steps to curb illegal activities inside jails. He headed a meeting of jail superintendents at the District Administrative Complex in Hoshiarpur.

All jail superintendents and officials from the prison headquarters were also present.
Officials said the meeting focused on the overall functioning of the prisons department and key initiatives being taken to address challenges such as overcrowding and the management of high-risk prisoners. The minister was also told about the proposed Punjab Prisons and Correctional Services Bill and the Punjab Good Conduct Prisoners Bill currently under consideration by the state government.
Talks were also held on restructuring the department, including the need to create additional posts to strengthen operations across prisons in Punjab. Jail superintendents highlighted issues related to staff shortages and infrastructure concerns such as the functioning of sewerage treatment plants, repair of toilets inside prisons and renovation of residential complexes.
Officials informed the minister about ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects, including the construction of a high-security jail in Ludhiana and a proposed women’s open jail in Patiala.
He told officials to expedite both projects so they can become operational at the earliest. Addressing officers, he stressed the importance of integrity and dedication in service and called for stronger action against illegal activities inside prisons while improving correctional and rehabilitation efforts for inmates.
