Punjab Police issued a red alert across the state on Friday ahead of the Dussehra celebrations and the upcoming panchayat elections, an official statement said.
The alert, ordered by Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, aims to ensure public safety and security, according to the statement.
Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, during a surprise visit to Jalandhar to assess security arrangements, said security had been intensified across Punjab.
More than 600 high-tech 'nakas' (checkpoints) have been set up to monitor suspicious activities, he added.
Shukla also confirmed that all inter-state and inter-district borders have been sealed.
Dussehra is set to be celebrated on Saturday, with panchayat elections scheduled for Tuesday.
During his visit, Shukla toured crowded markets in Jalandhar and interacted with officers stationed at various checkpoints.
