Punjab on red alert as intense 5-day heatwave looms.

Punjab is bracing for an intense spell of heatwave conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert across the state from June 9 to June 11. Maximum temperatures are projected to soar between 44°C and 45°C in several districts, posing a serious risk of heat-related illnesses.

The alert comes after a brief spell of pre-monsoon showers, which has now given way to dry and scorching conditions. Hot and dry winds are expected to sweep through the southern and southwestern parts of Punjab, further aggravating the situation.

As of Saturday, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature at 42.6°C, followed by Amritsar at 41.1°C, Ludhiana at 40.0°C, and Chandigarh at 39.9°C. According to the IMD, isolated parts of Punjab are likely to experience severe heatwave conditions, with a moderate to high probability of temperatures reaching the 45°C mark, especially in districts like Fazilka, Muktsar, Faridkot, Moga, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, Patiala, and Fatehgarh Sahib.

With the mercury expected to rise further in the coming days, health and emergency services have been placed on alert, and the state government is closely monitoring the situation to mitigate the impact of the extreme heat.

With the southwest monsoon yet to reach Punjab and no rainfall expected in the immediate forecast, residents are urged to remain cautious and follow official

health advisories to prevent heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. The days ahead are expected to be particularly challenging for Punjab and much of North India, as the region endures one of the most intense spells of summer so far.
