The Punjab Government has launched a formal inquiry into allegations of excessive force used by police personnel against Colonel Pushpinder Bath, a serving officer of the Indian Army, and his son.
The alleged incident took place on March 13, near Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, raising serious concerns about police conduct and accountability.
The officer’s family has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation, prompting the state government to emphasise its commitment to ensuring a transparent, fair, and impartial probe into the matter. The government aims to address the grievances of the affected family while upholding the principles of justice and due process.
In an official order issued by the Department of Home Affairs (Home-3 Branch), the Punjab Government has designated Paramvir Singh, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer currently serving as Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Patiala, as the inquiry officer.
To facilitate a comprehensive and authoritative investigation, he has been vested with the powers of a Special Executive Magistrate under Section 15 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

The government has set a strict timeline for the inquiry, mandating its completion within three weeks. Upon conclusion, a detailed report is to be submitted to the state government for further action.
In addition to the inquiry officer, a copy of the official order has been forwarded to key officials, including the District Magistrate of Patiala, Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Patiala, and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patiala.
The Punjab Government has reiterated its firm stance on maintaining law and order and has assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty based on the findings of the investigation. This inquiry underscores the state administration’s dedication to upholding justice and reinforcing public trust in law enforcement agencies.
