Former deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking an independent inquiry into what he has described as a politically influenced and biased investigation into the alleged attempt on his life.

The incident took place on December 4, 2024, outside the Ghantaghar Deori of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where Badal claimed he was performing “sewa” when the attack occurred. According to him, the assailant’s attempt was thwarted by the swift response of his security personnel.

In a petition filed through his counsels Arshdeep Singh and Arshdeep Singh Kler, Badal alleged that the investigation was being conducted in an unfair and prejudiced manner, and that the agencies involved were attempting to downplay the seriousness of the attack.

He claimed the FIR was filed after an undue delay and was based on the account of someone who was not an eyewitness. Crucially, he stated that his own statement was never recorded, which he argued reflected a deliberate attempt to misdirect the probe.

Badal further alleged that the accused in the case was a known history-sheeter and had past links with terrorism, yet was granted bail due to glaring lapses in the investigation.

He argued that this leniency was a direct consequence of how the case was being mishandled. Supporting his claim, he cited CCTV footage and witness testimonies which, he said, indicated the involvement of more individuals in a wider conspiracy. These leads, according to him, were either ignored or inadequately pursued by the investigating agency.

He maintained that the entire investigation appeared to be influenced by political considerations, which undermined its integrity and objectivity.

Given the severity of the lapses and what he described as clear signs of political interference, Badal urged the High Court to intervene and transfer the case to an independent agency to ensure a fair, impartial, and transparent inquiry.
