A 25-member team of Punjab Police has been stationed in Assam’s Dibrugarh for the past two days to oversee the transfer of seven aides of pro-Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh, officials said.
These individuals have been imprisoned in Dibrugarh Central Jail alongside Amritpal, the leader of ‘Waris de Punjab,’ for nearly two years.
While the exact date of their transfer has not been officially disclosed, officials indicated that it could take place within the next two to three days.
The detainees, including Daljit Singh Kalsi, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh, also known as Pradhan Mantri Bajeke, Basant Singh, and Gurinderpal Singh, will be moved following a decision by the Punjab government.
A total of ten members of the outfit, including Amritpal, who is an Independent Member of Parliament, and his uncle, have been lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail since 2023. They were arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) during a crackdown on the group in Punjab.

However, the Punjab government has chosen not to reinvoke the NSA for the seven detainees whose detention period is ending, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav stated on Sunday.
The Punjab Police team, led by Superintendent of Police Harinder Singh Gill, has been working on completing the legal formalities necessary for the transfer in Dibrugarh, a town in eastern Assam. Meanwhile, Amritpal Singh, along with Papalpreet Singh and Varinder Singh Johal, will remain in detention under the NSA until June 2025.
Amritpal Singh, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate, secured a victory from the Khadoor Sahib seat in Punjab.
His seven aides, once transferred, will be formally arrested in connection with the 2023 attack on Ajnala police station and will face legal proceedings accordingly.
