The Punjab Police conducted a large-scale cordon and search operation at bus terminals across all 28 districts of the state on Thursday as part of the ongoing ‘Yudh Nashian De Virudh’ (war against drugs) campaign, which began two and a half months ago.

The operation was conducted across all 28 police districts of Punjab on Thursday following the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.

Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, who oversaw the state-wide operation, said all police commissioners and senior superintendents were instructed to ensure the deployment of adequate police personnel under the supervision of SP-rank officers to ensure the operation’s success.

He said that suspicious individuals were frisked during the exercise carried out at bus stands across the state.

In addition, police teams continued their anti-drug drive and conducted raids at 486 locations on Thursday, resulting in the arrest of 124 alleged drug smugglers and the registration of 83 FIRs across Punjab, according to an official statement.

Meanwhile, Shukla said that Thursday's operation resulted in recovery of 4.02 kg heroin, 2.5 kg opium and Rs 27,090 allegedly transacted for drugs from the possession of those arrested.

He said that more than 200 police teams, comprising over 1,200 police personnel, under the supervision of 87 gazetted officers conducted raids across the state and checked as many as 481 suspicious persons during the day-long operation.

In Gurdaspur district, authorities used a bulldozer to demolish the illegally constructed homes of two suspected drug peddlers in Dida Sansia village. The properties were built on land belonging to the Water Resources Department. SSP Aaditya confirmed that both accused individuals have a criminal history and multiple cases filed against them.

Special DGP Arpit Shukla emphasised that Punjab Police is implementing a comprehensive strategy to combat drug trafficking. Under the state government’s three-pronged approach of Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP), the police have also facilitated the admission of 116 individuals into rehabilitation centres.

He added that such intensified operations will continue until the drug menace is completely eradicated from Punjab.
