Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday filed a complaint against the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, Iqbal Singh Lalpura for his participation in the rallies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while holding a constitutional position.
Lodging complaint, Punjab's regional political party requested the Election Commission of India to take strict action against Lalpura regarding the same.
Advocate Arshdeep Singh Kler, spokesperson and president of SAD's legal wing, lodged a written complaint with the EC. He stated that the Union Government established the National Commission for Minorities under the National Commission of Minorities Act, of 1992, to safeguard minority interests.
Kler emphasized that appointees like Lalpura are meant to prioritize minority welfare over partisan politics. He alleged that Lalpura's recent presence at the BJP office during a Congress MP's joining event violated constitutional and model code of conduct provisions.
Kler was present during the induction ceremony of Preneet Kaur, wife of ex-Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh to BJP.
