Tehsildars across Punjab have gone on strike in protest over the arrest of Tehsildar Sukhcharan Singh for accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000. The Tehsildars are planning to gather in Barnala and protest against the Punjab government and the Vigilance Bureau of Punjab.
According to reports, the Vigilance Bureau arrested Tapa Tehsildar Sukhcharan Singh on Wednesday while he was accepting the bribe. The Bureau stated that Singh is also the state president of the revenue officers' association.
The arrest followed a complaint filed by Amrik Singh, a resident of Bihla village in Barnala district. Singh informed the Vigilance Bureau that his friend, Harbhajan Singh, a resident of Maur Nabha village, had to register 2.4 kanal of agricultural land. However, the tehsildar was demanding a bribe of ₹20,000 for the registration.
After receiving the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau's Barnala unit acted quickly. They caught Singh red-handed while he was accepting the bribe in the presence of two official witnesses.
The bribe money was seized from the accused, and a case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Investigations are ongoing.
