Rachel Gupta, the first Indian to win the prestigious Miss Grand International title, has stepped down from her title less than a year after her historic victory, citing a “toxic environment,” broken promises, and mistreatment by the organisers.
The 20-year-old model from Jalandhar made the announcement on Wednesday via social media, stating that her experience as the reigning titleholder fell far short of her expectations. “This wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one for me,” Gupta wrote. “I was filled with pride and hope to represent my country, but what followed was months of silence, disrespect, and neglect.”
Gupta had secured the Miss Grand International 2024 crown in October last year during a grand finale in Bangkok, Thailand. Her journey to the international stage began after winning the Miss Grand India 2024 title, organised by Glamanand in August.
However, the Miss Grand International Organisation gave a starkly different version of events. In a statement shared on Instagram, the organisers announced the termination of Gupta’s title, citing multiple breaches of contract.
According to the organisation, Gupta allegedly took part in outside projects without approval and declined to participate in an official tour to Guatemala. “Miss Rachel Gupta failed to meet her responsibilities as a titleholder. The Miss Grand International Organisation hereby terminates her title, effective immediately. The crown must be returned within 30 days,” the statement read.
Rachel Gupta first made international headlines in 2022 when she won the Miss Super Talent of the World title in Paris at the age of 18. Her confident stage presence and compelling public persona had made her a rising star in India’s modelling and pageant circles.
When contacted for comment, Gupta’s family said she would soon address the matter in a press conference and share a full video statement on social media detailing her experience.
As the controversy unfolds, Gupta’s departure from Miss Grand International has sparked debate across the pageant industry, raising questions about the treatment of winners and contractual obligations behind the glamour.
