Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Jammu and Kashmir on September 4 to campaign for the ensuing assembly elections.

 

According to a schedule released by the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee, he will address a public meeting in the Dooru Assembly constituency from where Ghulam Ahmed Mir is contesting on Congress' ticket. 

 

The Congress Party had released its first list of nine candidates for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections on August 27, which was signed by AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal.

 

As per the list, leaders such as Ghulam Ahmad Mir is contesting from Dooru and Vikar Rasool Wani from Banihal.

 

Peerzada Mohd Syed has been fielded from the Anantnag constituency whereas Sheikh Riaz is being pitted against the Doda seat.

 

Other contestants: Surinder Singh Channi for Tral, Amanullah Mantoo for Devsar, Shaikh Zafarullah for Inderwal, Nadeem Sharief for Bhadarwah, and Pradeep Kumar Bhagat for Doda West.

 

The SP also announced support for the Congress-NC alliance in the J-K polls. SP President Jia Lal Verma declared Wednesday that the party would contest the polls and is likely to file nominations in the second or third phase.

 

The elections to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1.

 

Under the seat-sharing arrangement between Congress and NC, the National Conference will contest 51 seats while Congress will contest 32. The two parties have agreed to leave one seat each for CPI (M) and Panthers Party.

 

In all, Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies of which 7 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 9 for Scheduled Tribes (STs).

 

The Election Commission of India recognises 88.06 lakh eligible voters in the region. The elections will be the first to be held in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.
