Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, will kickstart the Congress party’s campaign for the upcoming Jammu & Kashmir assembly polls from today, said party sources.

He is supposed to address two rallies in Banihal and Dooru assembly constituencies of Ramban district.

Besides, Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Gandhi also reviewed poll preparedness during the meeting in Delhi on Tuesday.

He will arrive in Jammu at around 10 am from Delhi by a special flight this morning, party sources revealed.

From Jammu airport, he will be travelling to Banihal constituency to address a rally in favour of Congress candidate Vikar Rasool Wani. He will be accompanied by AICC (All India Congress Committee) general secretary Bharatsinh Solanki and JKPCC chief Tariq Hameed Karra.

After addressing the rally in Banihal, he is supposed to address another election rally in Dooru Anantnag in favour of the constituency of GA Mir.

These rallies are part of the campaign for the party’s candidates who are contesting in the first phase on September 18. JKPCC chief Karra said, “Rahul Gandhi will kick-start the party’s campaign from tomorrow.

He will address two public rallies in Ramban and Anantnag districts in support of Congress candidates Vikar Rasool Wani and Ghulam Ahmed Mir.”

The National Conference and Congress have forged a pre-poll alliance for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Both coalition parties have decided to contest elections under one unified front against the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Although both parties have called the pre-poll alliance a compulsion to defeat BJP in the elections.

Assembly polls in J&K are happening after a decade-long pause, and also the first since the centre reduced J&K’s status to Union territory, following revocation of special status.

While the national conference is competing on 52 seats, Congress will contest on 32. Additionally, two parties will have friendly contests on five seats.

Furthermore, they have left one seat each for the CPI(M) and the Panthers Party. Earlier in the day, AICC general secretary and In-charge J&K Bharatsinh Solanki and JKPCC chief Tariq Hameed Karra arrived here from Delhi to review arrangements for Gandhi's visit and met some party leaders and other functionaries.
