Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has donated his monthly salary of Rs 2.3 lakh to the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to support rehabilitation efforts for victims of the landslides in Wayanad.
The state unit of the Congress party confirmed the donation on Wednesday.
KPCC General Secretary M Liju announced that the donation is part of a broader initiative by the Congress to rebuild 100 houses for the families in Wayanad who lost their loved ones and homes in the devastating landslides on July 30.
Over 200 people died, and 78 remain missing in the tragedy that struck the villages of Punchirimattam, Chooralmala, and Mundakkai under the Meppadi panchayat.
As part of the rehabilitation drive, the KPCC has launched a mobile app called 'Stand with Wayanad - INC' to facilitate donations. Party units, MPs, MLAs, and supporters have been urged to contribute to the fund.
Donors will receive a digital receipt signed by KPCC President K Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly V D Satheesan.
A nine-member committee has been established by the KPCC to oversee the fund-raising and rebuilding efforts. KPCC President Sudhakaran is personally monitoring the progress of the rehabilitation work.
Notably, local mandalam committees in Wayanad have been exempted from fundraising duties.
