Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi arrived in Wayanad on Friday for a two-day visit, amid speculation of a shake-up in the district Congress leadership. According to party sources, they are there to attend a series of private events.
The two leaders landed at Kozhikode airport and then took a helicopter to the Padinjarathara Government High School ground. They were received by prominent party members, including Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Sunny Joseph, MP Shafi Parambil, MLA T Siddique, and Wayanad District Congress Committee President ND Appachan. After their arrival, the leaders checked into a local hotel and are scheduled to attend private engagements later in the evening.
It has been learnt that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who is visiting Wayanad, is expected to convene a crucial meeting with the All India Congress Committee general secretary (organisation), KC Venugopal, and the KPCC president, Joseph.
Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who has been in her constituency for the past week, began her day by visiting the Sree Kunnathu Mahavishnu Temple in Kozhikode. Following her darshan, she performed a Tulabharam ritual using plantains and also took time to appreciate the craftsmanship of the temple chariot.
The timing of the visit is significant as Priyanka has kept her distance from the District Congress Committee (DCC), relying instead on independent interactions with prominent personalities, including writer MN Karassery, Padma Shri awardee Cheruvayal Raman, religious leaders, and tribal community representatives.
The leadership trio are expected to review political affairs in Wayanad, particularly the party’s image crisis following cases of suicide.
According to party sources, Rahul and Sonia Gandhi will leave Wayanad on Saturday afternoon, while Priyanka Gandhi is expected to continue her constituency engagements until September 22.
