Northern Railway’s Jammu Division and stakeholders from the Jammu and Kashmir agriculture sector have joined hands to boost economic activities in the Union Territory, officials said on Saturday.
A meeting between railway officials and stakeholders was held to promote rail-based parcel movement from the Kashmir Valley.
The meeting, chaired by an Additional Member (Commercial) of the Railway Board, focused on augmenting parcel traffic from Kashmir by positioning railways as a reliable and cost-effective alternative to road transport.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, along with parcel traders from Kashmir, prominent fruit growers and key cargo aggregators, attended the meeting.
According to officials, key discussions focused on ensuring the fast movement of fresh agri-produce from Jammu and Kashmir to different parts of the country in a time-bound manner to increase profitability and preserve freshness.
The train departs from Budgam in central Kashmir at 6:15 am, travelling via Bari Brahmana and Ambala Cantonment before reaching Adarsh Nagar in Delhi at 5:30 am the following day, ensuring timely delivery of goods.
During the meeting, plans were shared regarding the upgradation of loading facilities at Budgam, Srinagar and Pampore railway stations.
Singhal said the objective was to establish a streamlined supply chain that enables farmers and traders in Kashmir to transport their goods all the way to Kanyakumari without delays.
“Products from Kashmir hold a distinct identity on the global stage… The Railways is not merely a mode of transport but a partner in the economic prosperity of this region,” he said.
