The Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into parts of the south Peninsular India, the India Meteorological Department has said in its latest update. It spread into more areas of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been observed in isolated regions of north Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, and Meghalaya.
Additionally, heavy rainfall was reported in isolated areas of Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and south interior Karnataka.
Monsoon progress
The monsoon’s progression is expected to continue, likely reaching the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and extending into southern Maharashtra, Goa, remaining parts of Rayalaseema, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh, IMD said. It will also likely advance into parts of south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and further into the Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal within the next 4-5 days.

Two cyclonic circulations
Two cyclonic circulations have been identified: one over Kerala and its neighbouring regions, and another over the west central Bay of Bengal, adjoining the southwest Bay of Bengal near south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu at lower tropospheric levels. Strong westerly winds are also prevalent along the Kerala coast.
IMD’s rainfall alert
Due to these influences fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) expected over Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Karnataka. Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is also anticipated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rayalaseema over the next five days.
Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala and Mahe, South Interior Karnataka until June 7th; Tamil Nadu and Telangana on June 5th and 6th, respectively. North Interior Karnataka till June 6th; Rayalaseema on June 6th.
