Several regions across Punjab experienced heavy rain on Saturday morning, providing much-needed relief from the intense heatwave that had gripped the state in recent days.
The heavy downpour was reported from Chandigarh, Mohali, Kharar, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Rupnagar, and SBS Nagar. According to the weather department, Pathankot received 18 mm of rainfall, while moderate showers were recorded in Rupnagar (2.5 mm) and SBS Nagar (1.5 mm).
The meteorological department said Chandigarh recorded nearly 6.4 mm of rain, bringing the minimum temperature down to 18 degrees Celsius, significantly cooler than the usual seasonal average.
For the past one and a half months, Punjab, along with neighbouring states including Haryana and New Delhi, has been facing an intense heatwave.
Temperatures, as per weather monitoring agencies, climbed to 44-45 degrees Celsius in northern parts of the country, with Rajasthan becoming the hottest state where temperatures at some places reached 50 degrees Celsius.
With this, the monsoon has arrived early in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, bringing down temperatures in most parts of the states.
