A tragic landslide occurred in the Jangambag area of the Sundernagar subdivision in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, resulting in the deaths of six people, including four from a single family. One person remains missing. The incident, which happened on Tuesday evening, buried two residential houses and also a passerby.
According to Mandi SP Sakshi Verma, residents reported hearing a loud rumbling sound just moments before the hillside collapsed, engulfing the homes situated at its base. A large-scale rescue operation was immediately launched.
Despite the challenging conditions, all six bodies were recovered from the debris by late Tuesday night. The victims have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, 35, his wife Bharti, 30, their daughter Kirat, 3, along with Shanti Devi, 70, and Surender Kaur, 56. The sixth deceased was an unidentified man who was on a scooty at the time of the landslide.

Rahul and his car are thought to be buried beneath the rubble, and rescue personnel are still actively looking for them. Several agencies, including the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police, responded quickly to the rescue effort.

Despite challenging weather, the rescue effort went on through the night under the careful supervision of Additional District Magistrate Dr Madan Kumar and Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan. Houses in the vicinity have been evacuated as a precaution because of worries about possible additional slope instability.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut, and Sundernagar MLA Rakesh Jamwal all expressed their condolences to the affected families.
The local meteorological office has issued an orange alert, forecasting heavy rain in isolated parts of Mandi, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur districts on Wednesday. A yellow alert for heavy rain has also been issued for the Una and Bilaspur districts.
