As Chennai commenced its Diwali celebrations, heavy rainfall lashed several parts of the city and its suburbs, including Velachery, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, and ECR Neelankarai, on Monday, resulting in waterlogging across numerous areas.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is highly likely in isolated places across several districts. The IMD also forecasted continued rainfall across coastal Tamil Nadu until October 22nd.
Rainfall amounts ranging from 64.5 mm to 111.5 mm are expected over districts including Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karaikal, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam.
Earlier, the IMD had announced that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal and move west-northwestward, gradually intensifying into a depression and potentially a deep depression in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Thoothukudi has been grappling with severe waterlogging following four consecutive days of heavy rainfall, which has significantly affected normal life in the city and its suburbs.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday reviewed the rain situation and the state's preparedness for the Northeast Monsoon during a video conference with District Collectors from the State Emergency Operations Centre in Chennai. He instructed officials to move residents living in coastal and low-lying areas to safer locations.
