The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a forest fire warning for Jammu and Kashmir, attributing it to the prolonged dry spell and severe rainfall deficit in the region.
“Very high forest fire risk is likely to occur over forest areas in J&K in the next seven days. In case of emergency, dial 112,” stated the NDMA in its advisory.
The forest cover in the Union Territory, comprising deodar, kail, and fir trees spread across varying altitudes, is particularly vulnerable due to its classification under the dry temperate category.
Officials highlighted that the region has experienced an 81 per cent deficit in rainfall from 1 to 22 January, receiving only 11.4 mm of precipitation against the normal 60.5 mm.
The persistent dry conditions have rendered the forests increasingly susceptible to fires. Authorities have urged residents and forest personnel to exercise utmost caution and adopt preventive measures to avert such occurrences.
“This alert is generated through our portal and is scientifically validated,” stated a senior official from the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA). “Based on its severity, we activate responders such as the fire and emergency services and the forest department.”
The official further mentioned that operation centres have been established to handle any potential incidents, with teams ready to respond swiftly to emergencies.
Residents have been encouraged to report fire-related emergencies by calling 112.
The NDMA advisory has also advised people to avoid venturing into forests during the next seven days to mitigate the risk of fire outbreaks.
Officials stressed the importance of adhering to safety protocols to minimise environmental damage, prevent loss of wildlife, and ensure public safety.
