Rains trigger waterlogging, massive traffic jams in Delhi- NCR

Heavy downpour in Delhi-NCR brought much relief from scorching heat but it triggered widespread water logging and massive traffic jams in many areas throughout the day.  Heavy rains that lashed Delhi and Gurgaon caused waterlogging on roads leading to Delhi Airport and many stretches,  connecting two cities and underpasses which remained affected for entire day.

An underpass in Delhi which remained filled with water for whole day after heavy rains affecting traffic movement


Heavy downpour in Delhi-NCR brought much relief from scorching heat but it triggered widespread water logging and massive traffic jams in many areas throughout the day.  Heavy rains that lashed Delhi and Gurgaon caused waterlogging on roads leading to Delhi Airport and many stretches,  connecting two cities and underpasses which remained affected for entire day.

 

Delhi's North Access Road, and several other areas experienced heavy traffic on Tuesday after incessant rains triggered waterlogging in Mahipalpur bypass— making commute difficult.Netizens began actively posting about the traffic snarls on Delhi Traffic Police's social media account on X, complaining of traffic congestion around Terminal 1 area of Delhi Airport, Rana Road and Shadipur Metro station.


The underpass near the Delhi Cantonment, Zakhira Underpass, Pul Prahladpur, ITO, Najafgarh Road and Rohtak Road, were also waterlogged affecting vehicular movement.Water also  entered  Delhi Airport terminal  1 of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, hours after the heavy downpour Tuesday evening and at many points the roads leading to airport remained jammed due to heavy traffic and little or no movement during early hours today.

 


It was on Tuesday late evening when Delhi NCR experienced heavy rainfall, prompting the diversion of at least 12 flights. SpiceJet, IndiGo, Air India – all issued travel advisories urging passengers to keep a tab on their flight status.The rain indeed brought a dip in temperature, with the day’s maximum settling at 36.2°C — nearly 4 notches lower than the seasonal average. The minimum temperature, however, remained slightly above normal at 28°C.

 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a Red Alert for Delhi-NCR predicting hail, thunderstorm across multiple locations, and also in parts of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh.As per IMD data, several parts of Delhi received light to moderate rainfall on Monday. Pusa recorded the highest at 41 mm, followed by Ayanagar with 23 mm, Narayana at 15 mm, Safdarjung with 10 mm, and Lodhi Road with 5 mm.

 

The incessant downpour led to knee-deep waterlogging in several areas like the underpass near Delhi Cantonment, Zakhira Underpass, Pul Prahladpurr, ITO, and Delhi Najafgarh Road and Delhi Rohtak Road, affecting vehicular movement.For Wednesday, the IMD had issued a yellow alert, predicting thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, particularly during the night.

 

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 34 and 27 degrees Celsius, respectively.The IMD also issued a moderate thunderstorm warning, highlighting potential impacts and precautionary measures. It cautioned that intense lightning could pose a threat to life, especially in open areas. Disruptions to traffic and delays in flight and train services are also likely. The advisory noted risks to livestock and people working outdoors.


Delhi remains under a yellow alert until Thursday, with the forecast indicating light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds through the period.
