Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan on Thursday paid heartfelt tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 35th death anniversary, calling him the ‘architect of modern India’ who encouraged the nation to dream beyond its limits.
In a Facebook post, Satheesan said Rajiv Gandhi was remembered with deep emotion and praised his role in guiding India towards modernisation and scientific advancement during his brief tenure as Prime Minister. “He devoted his youth to the service of the nation and inspired India to dream,” Satheesan wrote.
He further stated that Rajiv Gandhi, along with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the generations that followed them, stood firmly against the ‘politics of hatred’ throughout their lives.

Describing Rajiv Gandhi as the ‘architect of modern India’, Satheesan said several of his landmark decisions reflected the values of ‘love, humanity and secularism’. Referring to Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial in New Delhi, Satheesan remarked that ‘Veer Bhumi is not merely a source of inspiration for the Congress, but
for the entire nation’. He concluded the message by offering his ‘salutations to those luminous memories’.
Earlier in the day, floral tributes were offered at the KPCC office as part of the observance of Rajiv Gandhi’s martyrdom day. Satheesan, KPCC president and Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph, and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala attended the ceremony. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur by a female suicide bomber linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
