Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to visit the cloudburst-hit Chositi village of Kishtwar district on Sunday, reports citing sources said on Saturday.

Rescue and relief operations continue for the tenth consecutive day following a destructive cloudburst in the village that triggered flash floods and swept away hundreds, according to local eyewitnesses.

Singh will take stock of the situation and also meet the families of the victims whose loved ones remain untraced despite a relentless search operation.

The deadly cloudburst, which struck the village on August 14, triggered massive flash floods that have so far claimed 65 lives, with some reports suggesting over 70 people are still missing.

Rescue teams, including the Army, NDRF, SDRF, police, and local administration, remain engaged in large-scale operations to locate the missing persons.

Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah and several cabinet ministers, including the Deputy CM and Lok Sabha members, have visited the location and expressed solidarity with the families of the victims.

Additionally, the Northern Commander visited Chositi village on Friday and hailed the armed forces for the rescue and relief operations ongoing in the village.
Rajnath Singh’s visit highlights the intensity and the dire situation prevailing in the region, as rescuers are losing crucial time to locate the missing persons.

While hopes for survivors have already faded, concerns regarding the recovery of the dead ones persist among the rescuers, especially among the families of the victims who wait day and night to bid their final farewells to their loved ones.
