Locals in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district seek assistance from the government to rebuild their houses destroyed during the recent cross-border shelling.
The houses in border areas have been decimated by Pakistani shelling after India carried out OP Sindoor inside Pakistani territory on May 6-7.
One of the residents living in the border area told reporters that his entire house collapsed after shells hit the building.
He urged the government to provide his family with tents and other assistance since they have nowhere else to go.
“It was morning when I was going for my prayers, and we heard the explosion. We have a house with two floors, which came down. It has become uninhabitable. We should be given tents or some kind of assistance. They (officials) came, saw, and went away. I was admitted to the hospital (after injuries to the head) and received stitches. I have been discharged after seven days,” he said.
“I took loans to teach my daughter… We have no support. I urge the government to help us in any way possible,” he added.
The border areas and villages located along the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir have suffered massive destruction, which has left a trail of destruction behind, making the houses and other infrastructure either uninhabitable or unsafe for the residents.
Apart from the houses and infrastructure damages, several areas reported livestock losses worth lakhs being destroyed during the shelling, which remains a critical earning source for the majority of the people living near the border or LOC.
Last week, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary visited border villages near the LoC in Rajouri district and interacted with residents affected by recent hostilities.
Over a week ago, the locals residing in the border villages demanded that the government compensate them for the damaged houses.
