The political atmosphere in Jharkhand has become charged ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, with developments within the ruling alliance adding a new dimension to the contest. The situation intensified after the Congress announced Pranav Jha as its candidate for the June 18 Rajya Sabha polls, triggering discussions over seat-sharing and electoral strategy among alliance partners.

Soon after the Congress declaration on Thursday evening, Chief Minister Hemant Soren convened an emergency meeting of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislators on Friday morning.

During the meeting, party leaders reportedly deliberated on the Rajya Sabha election and resolved that JMM should contest both seats falling vacant from the state. The party also decided that the names of its candidates would be announced by the Chief Minister.

The developments assume significance as JMM leaders had earlier indicated that a collective decision on the Rajya Sabha election would be taken on June 5.

However, the Congress went ahead and named Pranav Jha, a senior functionary of the party and a close associate of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, as its nominee.

The announcement was followed by a late-night communication to JMM legislators, asking them to attend the crucial meeting called by the Chief Minister.

Following the meeting, state minister Hafizul Hasan told reporters that the party had decided to field candidates for both Rajya Sabha seats. The decision has added uncertainty to the electoral arithmetic, with political observers closely watching the next move of the alliance partners.

The Congress faces a challenging numerical situation in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly. With 16 MLAs of its own, the party would require substantial support from allies and other legislators to ensure the victory of its nominee. While the ruling alliance includes members from the Rashtriya Janata Dal and CPI (ML), the final voting pattern remains a subject of speculation.

The evolving political scenario has also created an opportunity for the opposition bloc, which collectively has 24 legislators, including 21 from the BJP and one each from the JD(U), LJP and AJSU Party.

If more than two candidates enter the fray, the contest could become highly competitive, with preference votes likely to play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the election.
