The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged theft of cash and jewellery from donation boxes at the Ram Mandir has uncovered clues pointing to possible tampering with CCTV footage, widening the scope of the investigation and bringing security personnel under scrutiny.

The development emerged during the third day of inquiries inside the temple complex, where investigators examined surveillance systems, recorded footage and security protocols.

Sources said indications of CCTV tampering have prompted the SIT to focus on employees responsible for monitoring, maintaining and overseeing the camera network. Investigators are examining whether any lapses or deliberate interference may have facilitated the alleged theft.

As part of the probe, Ramashankar Yadav, also known as Tinnu Yadav, was questioned for several hours. The SIT is also investigating the role of personnel associated with CCTV surveillance, gate-checking operations and overall security management at the temple complex.

According to documents reviewed by investigators, nearly Rs 10 crore was spent on security arrangements at the temple over the past 11 months. The alleged disappearance of cash and ornaments from donation boxes despite such expenditure has raised questions about the effectiveness of the security apparatus.

Donation counting process under scanner

The SIT is also scrutinising the process of counting donations and the role of the bank involved in handling temple funds.

Investigators are examining whether there were any procedural lapses during counting operations, particularly as the number of trust employees present during the exercise was reportedly lower than that of bank personnel.

Several individuals who directly reported to senior trust functionaries have also come under the scanner. Officials are collecting details related to service records and responsibilities of employees linked to surveillance systems, security management and visitor access.

Over 125 questioned so far

The SIT has prepared a list of around 200 individuals for questioning as part of the investigation.

More than 125 people have already been examined, with several questioned multiple times as investigators attempt to establish how the alleged theft occurred and whether it involved a wider network.

Meanwhile, a photograph reportedly linked to the donation-counting process has surfaced during the investigation. The image, said to have been extracted from a video, shows temple staff counting cash offerings placed on tables inside the temple premises.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and additional individuals could be questioned as more evidence emerges.
