Prohibitory orders were imposed in parts of Murshidabad district on Saturday after violent clashes broke out during a Ram Navami procession a day earlier, officials said.
The violence, reported from Raghunathganj and Jangipur areas, involved incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson between two groups. Police have so far arrested 30 persons in connection with the clashes, though their identities have not been disclosed.
A senior police official said the situation is now “normal and under control,” with heavy deployment of security forces in sensitive areas. Personnel from the state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been conducting patrols, while the Rapid Action Force (RAF) carried out route marches to instill confidence among residents.
Security has been intensified in several pockets, including around the sub-divisional hospital in Jangipur. “We are ensuring that people do not face any inconvenience. Our officials and paramilitary personnel are present in full strength,” the officer said.
While essential services remained operational, most shops in local market areas were shut, and footfall on the streets was significantly reduced. Vehicular movement, however, continued without major disruption.
The violence reportedly began near Mackenzie Park in Raghunathganj after an altercation over loud music being played during the procession. Some individuals objected to the music near a place of worship, which escalated into clashes that spread across different parts of the twin towns.
Raghunathganj and Jangipur are located on opposite sides of a river, with the sub-divisional hospital situated in Raghunathganj.
Authorities have urged residents to maintain calm and avoid spreading rumours, as security forces continue to monitor the situation closely.
