Punjab Police have apprehended another shooter reportedly involved in the murder of kabaddi promoter and player Kanwar Digvijay Singh, also known as Rana Balachauria, last December. The accused was nabbed from Agartala in Tripura, officials said on Monday.
Aditya, alias Makhan, was apprehended by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab Police during a joint operation carried out with Central agencies and the Tripura Police, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.
Rana Balachauria (30) was shot dead during a kabaddi tournament held at Sohana in Mohali on December 15 last year. The incident had triggered shock across the sporting community and raised concerns over organised crime links.
“In a major breakthrough against organised crime, the AGTF in a well-coordinated operation with central agencies and Tripura Police apprehended Aditya alias Makhan, one of the shooters involved in the sensational murder of kabaddi promoter Rana Balachauria, from Agartala, Tripura,” the DGP said in a post on X.
He added that the accused and his associates carried out the planned murder on instructions from foreign-based handlers. While other accomplices were earlier arrested from Kolkata, Makhan had been on the run and was evading arrest until now.
