A man accused of abducting and raping a minor girl was allegedly lynched by an angry mob in Jharkhand's Chatra district on Tuesday, triggering tension in the Tandwa area. The victim's father was also assaulted during the violence.
According to police and local sources, the incident took place in Badgaon village under Tandwa police station limits. A minor girl had reportedly gone out to relieve herself on Monday evening when she was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted by the accused, identified as Mohammad Imroz.
The girl returned home on Tuesday morning and narrated the alleged incident to her family, following which news of the alleged crime spread rapidly across the village.
Enraged villagers gathered outside the accused's residence in large numbers. The mob allegedly dragged Imroz out of his house and brutally assaulted him with sticks, stones and other objects. He sustained critical injuries in the attack.
The crowd also allegedly tied Imroz's father to a pole and assaulted him. Some local residents claimed that the attack continued despite the presence of police personnel.
However, police denied the allegation, stating that the assault had taken place before the police reached the spot.
Police managed to rescue the critically injured Imroz and rushed him to the Tandwa Community Health Centre. He was later referred to Hazaribagh for advanced treatment but succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.
Following the incident, heavy police deployment has been made in the area to prevent any further escalation. Authorities said the situation is under control but remains tense.
Police have launched an investigation into both the alleged rape case and the mob lynching. Raids are being conducted to identify and arrest those involved in the assault, with investigators examining video footage and other evidence collected from the scene.
Officials have appealed to residents to maintain peace and allow the law to take its course, reiterating that those responsible for the mob violence will face legal action.
