Self-styled godman Asaram, who is serving life imprisonment for a 2013 rape conviction, returned to his ashram in Jodhpur's Pal village on Tuesday night after being granted interim bail.

Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday allowed Asaram temporary relief until 31 March, enabling him to seek treatment at a location of his choice.

His counsel, Nishant Bora, confirmed that Asaram must adhere to the conditions stipulated by the court during this period.

Having been under parole at an Ayurvedic hospital in Jodhpur for the past few days, Asaram left for his ashram late on Tuesday.

"He had been admitted in an Ayurveda hospital of the city for the past few days on parole and left for his ashram late on Tuesday," a police officer stated.

Grand welcome

News of the interim bail triggered celebrations among Asaram’s supporters, who gathered in large numbers outside the hospital.

Upon his exit, he was garlanded by followers before proceeding to his ashram, where he was received with cheers and chants of support.

The High Court's decision follows a recent Supreme Court ruling granting Asaram similar relief in another rape case.

Citing his deteriorating health, the apex court permitted bail until 31 March to facilitate medical treatment.

Asaram, sentenced to life imprisonment in April 2018 for the rape of a minor at his ashram in 2013, has been serving his term under strict confinement.

However, the interim bail offers him temporary reprieve, drawing both criticism and support across various quarters.

While his supporters view the decision as a necessary measure for his health, critics argue that the move undermines justice for the survivors of his crimes.

The Rajasthan High Court emphasised that the bail terms must be strictly followed. This includes limitations on his movements and regular updates on his health status.

As the court proceedings continue in the background, Asaram’s temporary return to the ashram has reignited discussions on high-profile cases involving religious leaders and the complexities of balancing justice with humanitarian considerations.
