Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather has created a record by presiding over all 22 sittings of the recently concluded 2026 Budget Session.
According to statistics, the Speaker, while demonstrating exceptional commitment towards parliamentary responsibilities, chaired proceedings for an impressive 102.35 hours out of the total 110.36 hours of the session. The remaining eight hours were collectively chaired by three members from the panel.
In the absence of a Deputy Speaker, this achievement stands as a record and marks a first-of-its-kind occasion in the legislative history of the Assembly.
Despite facing several challenges, the Speaker’s unwavering presence of mind and active leadership throughout the session have been widely admired. His steady approach ensured the smooth and efficient conduct of Assembly’s business, which is unprecedented and unparalleled in the Legislative history.
Members of the Legislative Assembly from the ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, and People’s Democratic Party expressed admiration and appreciation for his exemplary efforts. Some members described his dedication as an inspiration and a testament to his sense of duty.
