Passengers often use social media to complain about issues like bad food, dirty bathrooms, and delays on Indian trains. Recently, a passenger shared videos of rats crawling inside an AC coach of the South Bihar Express, raising concerns about hygiene and cleanliness.
Prashant Kumar had paid over ₹2,000 for a second AC ticket on the South Bihar Express, expecting a comfortable journey. However, when he boarded the Ara-Durg train, he was shocked to find multiple rats inside his coach.
He shared videos online showing the rats running across the coach and wrote, "PNR 6649339230, Train 13288, multiple rats in coach A1, climbing over the seats and luggage. Is this why I paid so much for AC 2 class?"
Mr. Kumar immediately called the railway helpline (139) for help. The onboard staff responded by spraying an insecticide meant for cockroaches.
However, he later claimed in a Reddit post that the spray made the situation worse, leaving him to deal with both the rats and the strong chemical smell. He also said that his complaint was automatically closed without a proper resolution.
After the issue gained attention on social media, the Railways responded. They stated that, following a complaint on Twitter, cleaning staff dry-swept and mopped the A1 coach with disinfectant. They also sprayed mosquito repellent under the seats and placed glue pads to trap the rats.
The video received mixed reactions. Some people were outraged and called it unacceptable, while others dismissed it as a common problem on Indian trains. Some users even made jokes about the situation.
One user commented that train hygiene and food quality were poor despite high ticket prices. They also pointed out that bedding is not cleaned regularly, making it difficult to compare Indian Railways with trains in other countries.
Another user joked, "Your ticket might be RAC, check it. Both of you will have to share the seat."
