Red alert in J&K for next 48 hours as heavy rain predicted

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have declared a red alert over the possibility of heavy rains, thundershowers, flash floods, and cloudbursts.


The MeT Department on Tuesday predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in the next 48 hours across the UT, warning that rivers, tributaries, and Nallahs may witness a sharp increase in water levels.

 

Besides, it said “Thunderstorms, flash floods, and landslides are possible during this period at vulnerable places. While the majority of the Kashmir region, except for the higher reaches, is expected to receive moderate rainfall."

 

However, Jammu division, which is already battling the rain-induced flash floods, is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in Jammu, along with Kathua, Udhampur, and Reasi districts, with moderate to heavy rainfall over Doda, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, and Ramban in Jammu division and Anantnag and Kulgam in the Valley.

 

The bad weather conditions are expected to continue over the next 48 hours, with the occurrence of rainfall during the late night today and tomorrow morning, the MeT said.

 

Following the inclement weather advisory, the authorities have declared a red alert in J&K for the next 48 hours to tackle all emerging possibilities.

 

People have been advised to stay away from water bodies, Nallah, loose structures, etc., as there is a possibility of cloudburst, flash flood, landslide, mudslide, shooting stones in vulnerable areas.

 

District administrations have set up helplines and control rooms with 24/7 attendance of concerned officials.
