The walls of South Calcutta Law College still bear chilling graffiti: “Team MM” and “Monojit Dada, you are in our hearts” — a disturbing reminder of how deeply rooted his influence was.

Photographs of TMC student-wing leader Monojit Mishra posing alongside senior party leaders, including ministers and prominent figures within the party’s top ranks, have gone viral on social media — causing considerable embarrassment for the ruling Trinamool Congress.

As opposition parties intensify their attacks and public protests swell — evoking grim memories of the trainee doctor’s rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital — the TMC has scrambled to issue statements distancing itself from Monojit. However, the damage appears done. The party’s explanations have failed to shake off the image now firmly etched in the public’s mind.

Monojit was arrested following allegations that he, alongside two students, raped a student on the college campus. The main gate was locked, and the victim claims she was assaulted multiple times between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm. While one of the accused carried out the assault, the others reportedly stood guard outside. Shockingly, the security guard on duty did nothing to intervene.

Sources within the college and police department reveal that this is far from Monojit’s first brush with criminality.

According to police, Monojit has emerged as a central figure in the investigation. “He had been arrested two months ago for allegedly assaulting a policeman. However, he was booked under relatively minor sections, enabling him to secure bail with ease. His history of aggressive behaviour and influence has become a key focus of the current investigation,” said a police officer.

Monojit’s name first surfaced in 2012 when he was admitted to the college. Within a year, he was allegedly involved in a stabbing incident. Although expelled in 2014, he was readmitted in 2017, and from then on, a series of complaints followed — including acts of vandalism, intimidating teachers and damaging CCTV equipment.

Despite his growing rap sheet, Monojit was elevated to the role of unit president of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). Many students allege that he misused photographs with senior Trinamool leaders to bolster his authority and intimidate juniors.

While TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharya acknowledged Monojit’s appointment in 2019, he maintained that the organisation could not have anticipated such behaviour. Top TMC leaders, including Shashi Panja and Kunal Ghosh, condemned the incident, asserting, “No monkey business will be tolerated.”

However, the opposition is questioning how someone with a history of serious allegations was given organisational responsibility at all. “Why was Monojit allowed to continue within the system despite multiple past offences?” asked BJP’s state president Sukanta Majumdar.
