Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, after offering prayers at the Golden Temple, emphasised the long-standing cordial relationship between the people of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
Speaking to the media, Agnihotri said recent incidents of confrontation involving visiting Punjabi youth and Himachal residents were cases in isolation and did not reflect the broader relationship between the two communities. He asserted that the ties between Punjabis and Himachalis have always been harmonious and rooted in mutual respect.
Accompanied by Nalagarh MLA Hardeep Singh Bawa, he expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to offer prayers at the revered shrine of the Guru Sahibs, which attracts devotees from across the globe.
Recent tensions between Punjabi visitors and Himachali locals stemmed from isolated incidents during the tourist season, particularly in areas like Kullu and Manikaran. Disputes arose when some Punjabi youths displayed flags bearing controversial symbols, which led to clashes and confrontations with locals. These incidents gained attention on social media and briefly disrupted the otherwise peaceful relationship between the two communities.
In retaliation, there were reports of Himachal-bound buses being vandalised in Punjab. This prompted concerns over safety and led both Himachal and Punjab governments to step in quickly. Chief Ministers of both states communicated to defuse tensions, and appeals for calm were made by community leaders and public figures. Despite the flare-up, authorities emphasised that these were isolated cases and worked to restore normalcy.
