The indefinite relay hunger strike spearheaded by the Uripok Apunba Lup and Uripok Apunba Nupi Lup has entered its 38th day at Uripok Canteen Crossing.
The strike is a plea for justice for the six victims—three women and three children—who were abducted and brutally murdered in Jiribam district last month. ;
Protesters are demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of the perpetrators.
One of the demonstrators remarked, “The relay hunger strike has exceeded one month, and today marks the 38th day. But the state government has yet to apprehend those involved in this heinous crime, which is very unfortunate.”
The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of women and children in Manipur. Protesters pointed out that while stringent laws exist to safeguard women and children, such protections appear to elude the state.
“There are stringent national laws and regulations to protect women and children and prevent crimes against them. However, such protections don’t reach the state of Manipur,” said a protester.
The demonstrators have vowed to continue their hunger strike until their demands are met.
The tragic incident, attributed to Kuki militants, involved the abduction and killing of six members of the Meitei community, including three children.
The killings sparked tension across Manipur, but the unrest was eventually brought under control after days of protests.
