Acting on a request by DGP Harpreet Singh Sidhu, a 1992-batch IPS officer, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has repatriated him to his parent cadre of Punjab, which has led to speculation whether he is tipped to be the new chief of the Punjab Police.
"The undersigned is directed to refer to ITBP on the subject mentioned above and to convey the approval of competent authority for premature repatriation of Harpreet Singh Sidhu, Additional Director General, ITBP, to his parent cadre with immediate effect, at his own request, under provisions of para-14.1 of IPS Tenure Policy,” said an order issued by an under-secretary of the Home Ministry.
Punjab Police chief DGP Gaurav Yadav and DGP Harpreet Singh Sidhu belong to the same batch of the IPS cadre. Sidhu, senior to Gaurav Yadav in the gradation list, will retire on May 31, 2027, while Yadav will superannuate on April 30, 2029.
