Police recovered the body of an IIT Roorkee research scholar, aged 40, from the Ganga canal in the Manglaur Kotwali area on Monday. The deceased, identified as Mohit, was a sixth-semester research scholar in the Electronics and Communication Engineering department at IIT Roorkee. According to police, he had been away from the institute campus for the past three to four days.
SP Rural Shekhar Chand Suyal said the scholar was a resident of Nainital district. Police received information about a body floating in the Ganga canal near Asafnagar Jhal on Sunday night. After identification, it was confirmed that the deceased was a research scholar from IIT Roorkee, the officer said. He added that prima facie the case appears to be suicide, as no injury marks or signs of struggle were found on the body.
During a search of the scholar’s hostel room, police found a notebook containing certain writings that are being examined as a possible suicide note. Police said the family members of the deceased have not raised any suspicion regarding the death so far. However, all angles are being investigated.
SP Suyal also said police had not received any missing person complaint earlier, as neither the institute nor family members had reported him missing. IIT Roorkee media cell in-charge Sonika Singh said students often leave the hostel for a few days for personal outings, and therefore his absence had not raised concern.
In an official statement, IIT Roorkee expressed grief over the incident and said the institute received information from the police late Sunday night. The institute said the student had been identified by his relatives and added that the administration is fully cooperating with the police in the ongoing probe.
