Garli and Paragpur villages.

Nestled in the Kangra valley, under the snow-capped Dhauladhar range, lie the twin villages of Garli and Paragpur. Known for their stunning heritage homes and peaceful countryside, these villages are a hidden gem of Himachal Pradesh. Also known as “Dynasty of the Soods,” both villages have been declared heritage zones by the Ministry of Tourism.

As you stroll through their narrow lanes, you will see old havelis and mansions built with a mix of architectural styles, Belgian, Italian, Rajput, Portuguese and Islamic, which makes these the most architecturally unique spots in the country. Wooden carvings, jaali work, Gothic arches and jharokha windows line the streets, giving each home a personality of its own.

These homes also carry whimsical and captivating names, such as Santri Wali Kothi, Mystery House, Raeeso Wali Kothi and Bhagwan Niwas. Each one tells a story. One has two sentry statues on its roof. Another boasts colourful murals and Rajasthani designs.

These heritage structures are architectural marvels, they reveal beautiful stories. The walls here narrate the stories of trade, travel and inheritance. In the past, owners competed to build the grandest house, adding beauty and pride to the village.

But today, many of these grand homes are locked up or lie abandoned. Their owners have moved to cities like Shimla and Delhi in search of better prospects, leaving caretakers behind.

Still, all is not lost. A change is happening. Some younger family members are returning, drawn to their ancestral roots. A few havelis have already been restored. Chateau Garli, once home to Mela Ram, has been lovingly rebuilt by his grandson after years of neglect. Judges Court is now a heritage resort run by the family.

Garli and Paragpur were built in the 1800s by the Sood community — wealthy traders who had travelled across the world. Their dream homes still stand, but many need urgent care.

Notably, Garli and Paragpur were developed by the Sood community in the 19th century. Soods were traders who originally hailed from Rajasthan who, after traveling the world, chose to build their trading settlement in the region. These European-inspired mansions still stand, though many require immediate conservation and care. Now, there’s a new wave of hope. These old walls may soon echo with life again.
