A retired Army man in Punjab’s Ludhiana district shot his son dead before ending his own life on Sunday night after a long-standing domestic dispute turned fatal. According to officials, the retired serviceman first shot his son and later consumed poison to kill himself. The deceased have been identified as Surinder Singh, a retired Army sergeant, and his son Gursharan Singh, alias Ginni, residents of the New Aggar Nagar area.
As per locals, the father and son had been embroiled in a dispute for years over Surinder’s wish to remarry after the death of his wife around five years ago.
Sources claimed that the ex-serviceman was in contact with a woman and wanted to marry her. However, Gursharan, his only son, strongly opposed the move, leading to frequent arguments between the two over the past three years.
The simmering tensions ultimately turned violent when Surinder allegedly pulled out his licensed 12-bore double-barrel gun and shot his son.
He fired two shots— one hitting Gursharan in the arm and the second proving fatal. Following the killing, Surinder returned home and consumed poison (sulphas).
Alarmed by the gunfire, neighbours informed the police and rushed both to the hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead. Gursharan worked as a driver and was unmarried. He is survived by two sisters — Pushpinder Kaur, who lives in England, and Harpreet Kaur, who lives in Canada. Both have been informed about the incident.
