An elderly woman and her 36-year-old son were found dead in Bilaspur’s Rauda Sector after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance, police said on Saturday. Initial findings suggest the family had been under stress because of the son’s prolonged illness.
The deceased have been identified as 66-year-old Kumud Sharma and her son Akshansh. Originally from Arki, the two had been living in a rented house in Rauda Sector for some time.
Akshansh had been seriously ill for the past two to three years and was bedridden, police said. Kumud Sharma was a retired teacher.
Neighbours became suspicious on Friday afternoon after noticing no movement from the house for a long time. When local residents entered the house, they found both mother and son dead inside.
Police suspect the woman may have taken the step because of emotional distress caused by her son’s critical health condition and financial difficulties.
Officials said the exact poisonous substance consumed by the two has not been identified yet. Both bodies have been sent to the regional hospital for post-mortem examination.
Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Sandeep Dhawal confirmed the incident and said a case of suspected suicide involving a mother and son has come to light.
Further probe is underway, he added.
