The investigation into the RG Kar case has gathered renewed momentum following a change of government in West Bengal, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accelerating its probe. A fresh FIR has now been registered based on a new complaint filed by the victim’s father at the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate on Monday, bringing serious charges including criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.
The developments follow a memorial meeting held on Sunday at Lokasanskriti Bhavan in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, marking the second death anniversary of the doctor-student. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attended the event along with the victim’s parents and announced the formation of a Special Investigation Committee (SIT), led by the Barrackpore Police Commissioner, to pursue a parallel probe through a newly instituted case.
At the meeting, the Chief Minister raised questions over the circumstances of the victim’s cremation, alleging that it was carried out in undue haste on the day of the incident. He identified three individuals — former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Somnath Dey, and Sanjib Mukherjee — whose roles at the cremation ghat, he said, appeared suspicious and required detailed scrutiny. Following these remarks, an FIR was registered against them and several others.
Authorities have also initiated a separate inquiry into why no cremation fees were charged to the family. The alleged irregularities pertain to the cremation conducted at the Natagarh Kadamtala Crematorium, which falls under the jurisdiction of Ghola Police Station.
According to the Chief Minister, the cremation — originally scheduled for the third slot — was rescheduled to the first slot, allegedly to expedite the process. He further claimed that mandatory procedures were bypassed, including the non-payment of stipulated charges and the absence of a close relative’s signature.
At the memorial, the Chief Minister confirmed that three senior police officials had already been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty. The administration stated that the parallel investigation — alongside the ongoing CBI probe and court proceedings — is aimed at addressing all unresolved aspects of the case.
