The CBI has intensified its probe into the brutal rape and murder of a young trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by summoning former Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal. He has been directed to appear before the central agency next week with several crucial documents.
The latest summons comes amid a series of interrogations conducted by the agency in recent days. Last Friday, two IPS officers Abhishek Gupta and Indira Mukhopadhyay were questioned extensively by CBI officials. Both officers were subjected to marathon interrogation sessions, during which investigators collected key documents detailing the sequence of events on the night of the incident and subsequent actions taken by the police. These materials are currently being scrutinised and cross-verified by the agency.
The investigation has also taken a political turn. State minister Agnimitra Paul has demanded the immediate arrest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Goyal, alleging destruction of evidence and a cover-up in the case. She has called for a joint interrogation of all individuals present at the hospital and the crime scene on the night of the incident.
Meanwhile, the CBI’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has widened the scope of the probe, focusing on the alleged hasty cremation of the victim’s body. Investigators are examining the role of the Panihati crematorium to establish what transpired following the crime on August 9, 2024.
In this connection, former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh appeared before the SIT for questioning. The victim’s family has raised serious allegations regarding his involvement in the cremation process. Ghosh was questioned for several hours at the CBI office as officials sought to piece together the sequence of events through documents and testimonies.
With multiple high-profile individuals now under the scanner, the investigation has gathered fresh momentum. The CBI is expected to continue its probe with further interrogations and examination of evidence in the coming days.
