RG Kar horror: Protest outside Swasthya Bhavan enters day 3

Junior doctors continue their protest at Swasthya Bhavan, Kolkata, demanding justice for RG Kar rape-murder victim.

Junior doctors continued their 'cease work' and sit-in demonstration outside Swasthya Bhavan, the headquarters of the West Bengal Health Department, for the third consecutive day on Friday, following a failed attempt to hold talks with the state government over the ongoing RG Kar Medical College crisis.

On Thursday, around 30 junior doctors, representing 26 medical colleges participating in the protest, visited Nabanna for a proposed meeting with the state government.

However, the talks failed to take place after the government rejected the doctors' demand for live-streaming the discussions.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the meeting could not be live-streamed as the issue was sub-judice, pending before the Supreme Court.

She offered an alternative, saying, "We have made arrangements to record it and hand over the recording to them with the permission of the apex court if needed."

The agitating doctors, however, have vowed to continue their demonstration outside Swasthya Bhavan until their key demands are met.

These include the suspension of the Police Commissioner, Health Secretary, Director of Health Services, and Director of Medical Education.

"We will continue our agitation despite wanting to resume our work, but not until our demands are met," said members of the protesting doctors' forum.

While the state government has repeatedly urged the doctors to return to work, the medics remain firm on their demand for complete transparency in the negotiation process, insisting on live-streaming any future discussions.

Support from the public has been a significant morale booster for the protesting doctors. Many local residents have shown solidarity by providing food and essentials to the demonstrators, often at personal expense.

"I am offering my respect to these living gods for the future of my 11-year-old daughter," said a father who distributed sweets to the protesting medics.

A heavy police presence continues to be maintained around Swasthya Bhavan in Salt Lake to ensure law and order and smooth traffic flow.
