Representatives from Junior Doctor’s front had tabled 10 key demands in front of the state government. On the fulfillment of which, they would have withdrawn the indefinite hunger strike.
Although it has been learnt that the medics are not satisfied with the discussion they had at the meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, they called off the hunger strike on Monday night, considering the requirements of common people.
On the meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, the state government has responded to their demands and a decision have been made.
The state government’s response to the demand are as follows:
Demand: A task force in each medical college with elected representatives of junior doctors to supervise installation of CCTV cameras and the setting up of on-call rooms and bathrooms
Response: A state-level task force will look into all complaints regarding government medical colleges and district hospitals in Bengal. The task force will have four junior doctors, a woman medical student and five senior government officials, including the chief secretary, the director general of police and the commissioner of Kolkata Police. Every government medical college in the state will have a committee of stakeholders.
Demand: Election to the students’ council and resident doctors’ association in every medical college
Response: “We want a democratic ambience to return through the elections,” CM Banerjee said. Student union elections at medical colleges to be held by March 2025. Chief secretary Manoj Pant said, once the elections are held then the request of the junior doctors to have representatives at various committees as members can be implemented.
Demand: An inquiry committee in every medical college to investigate those involved in “threat syndicates” and mechanisms to punish them. There should be an inquiry committee formed at the state level
Response: The government will take the initiative to restore a healthy ambience. CM Banerjee requested the junior doctors to take part in the process to restore a healthy environment. The chief secretary and the health department will ensure transparency in the college examinations. Exams have to be conducted in a transparent way. Nobody should be able to resort to unfair means during an exam.
In addition to this, the principals of medical colleges have to inform the state government before taking any action against anyone. There will be an open desk and number for a girl tp report if she faces any problem.
Demand: Removal of NS Nigam who is appointed as the state principal health secretary
Response: The government accepted a file from the junior doctors containing allegations against state health secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam. However, a clarity on his removal has not been sort from the state government.
