After seven months of waiting, the family of the RG Kar Rape and murder victim’s family finally received the death certificate on Wednesday following repeated requests. State Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam personally visited their home and handed over the document.
The victim’s parents had long complained about not receiving the certificate, despite multiple attempts to obtain it.
Expressing his relief, the victim’s father said, "The Health Secretary himself came to our house and gave me the original copy of my daughter’s death certificate. He assured us that if we ever need another copy, the MSVP will provide it. We also received an online link to print it if necessary."
He further recounted the long and frustrating ordeal he endured since September, saying, "I have been running from one office to another — first to the health department, then the borough office, and even to RG. I formally submitted a request on January 31, but the struggle continued. I never expected the health secretary himself to come and hand it over."
Speaking about the emotional toll, he added, "Only a grieving father can understand the pain of having to beg for his own daughter’s death certificate. Though we have finally received it, we still don’t know why it took so long."
When asked about the matter, the Nigam gave a brief response, "They were supposed to receive the death certificate, and now they have. There was no further discussion," he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the issue in the Assembly on Wednesday, referring to the controversial RG case. She said, "We want justice for the victim of the RG Kar incident.”
The case dates back to August 9, when a female doctor was brutally raped and murdered while on duty at RG. The incident sparked massive protests, with junior doctors staging hunger strikes and work stoppages for an extended period.
Following the trial, a lower court convicted civic volunteer Sanjay Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family remains dissatisfied, alleging that more individuals were involved in the crime. They have vowed to continue their movement, demanding justice for all those responsible.
Two days ago, the Supreme Court assigned the Calcutta High Court to hear the plea of the victim’s family.
