In response to comments made by the father of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, who is calling for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation, state minister Firhad Hakim stated that the victim's family should exercise restraint and remain within the limits of their freedom of speech.
Hakim, known as Mamata's trusted lieutenant, also alleged that the victim's parents are politicising the RG Kar tragedy.
While addressing a local gathering near his North 24 Parganas home, which was organised on Saturday evening to demand capital punishment for the convict Sajnay Roy, the victim's father criticised the role of Kolkata police and the RG Kar Hospital authorities citing the Sealdah court's verdict that sentenced Roy to life imprisonment.
"The chief minister also holds the portfolios of health and police minister. She should review the verdict copy, take responsibility for the incident, and resign immediately. After reading the verdict, we have concluded that she has lost her right to remain the chief minister of the state," said the father while addressing the gathering.
In response to the father's comment, Hakim stated, "We have the utmost sympathy for the victim's family. However, what they are doing now is political. While it is understandable for them to be driven by the loss of their daughter, they should not make statements that go beyond their right to free speech."
Hakim accused left-wing organisations of instigating the victim's family, stating that the father's actions were nothing more than political maneuvering. "What you are doing, influenced by a certain group of people, is not right. The chief minister didn't attain her position due to their influence. She holds her office because of the mandate given by the people of Bengal," he asserted.
Hakim said he was also equally concerned over the way the Central Bureau of Investigation conducted the probe into the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Ospital.
In its order turning down the CBI's plea for the death sentence for Roy, the special court criticized the RG Kar Hospital authorities for trying to disguise the murder as a "suicide." The court also pointed out that the personnel at the Tala police station "kept everything behind the curtain."
