RG Kar victim’s family urge for united protest on Aug 9

They have also extended their support to the 'Reclaim the Night’ protest planned for August 14, against what they call institutional failure and systemic cover-ups.

Rape and murder of a 31-year-old medic at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital on August 9, 2024, led to nationwide protests against the security of women folk at workplaces.

As the one-year anniversary of the Kasba Law College incident approaches, the parents of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim on Sunday have issued a public appeal to the family of South Calcutta Law College victim, urging them to take to the streets in protest and demand justice. The call comes ahead of August 9, the date which marks a year since the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctors at the state-run healthcare facility. The RG Kar victim’s parents have announced a 'Nabanna Abhijan' on that day,  a mass protest march towards the state secretariat. and have invited all sections of society, regardless of political affiliation, to join in solidarity.

They have also extended their support to the 'Reclaim the Night’ protest event planned for August 14, reigniting civil resistance against what they call institutional failure and systemic cover-ups.

State Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari has already thrown his weight behind the campaign, meeting with the RG Kar victim’s family and backing their demand for a broader movement encompassing both cases.

The mother of the RG Kar victim, said the case remains buried in silence. “My daughter did not die in an accident, she was murdered. It happened inside a government hospital, which is supposed to be a safe place. A civic volunteer was arrested initially, but after that, nothing. No proper investigation, no justice. Outsiders couldn’t have done this without internal help,” she said.

She expressed anger at what she described as "deliberate negligence," and criticised the state’s failure to pursue accountability. The family believes that had swift and strict action been taken in their daughter’s case, the culture of impunity might not have spread so dangerously.

Drawing parallels with the law college case, the RG Kar victim’s mother pointed to what she called a "thriving threat culture" in educational institutions.

“People like Monojit Mishra or Sandeep Ghosh behave recklessly because they know they are protected. They have political backing,” she said. Though she clarified that the two cases were not identical, she emphasised that both emerged from a broader culture of fear, intimidation and political impunity.

Monojit, an alumnus of the law college and TMC’s student-wing leader, is the prime accused in the law college incident while Sandeep was the then principal of RG Kar Medical College when the brutal incident took place last year.

In an emotional message to the Kasba victim’s mother, the RG Kar victim’s mother urged her not to retreat from public life. “Don’t stay silent. It won’t work if you stay hidden. Take to the streets. If we stay quiet, the criminals will win,” she said.

The family also criticised the absence of any significant progress in the RG Kar case. “If there had been a proper trial, maybe others would have thought twice. But that didn’t happen. That’s why these people are growing bold,” said the victim’s mother.

With both cases exposing deep cracks in institutional accountability — from hospitals to college campuses — the upcoming Nabanna Abhijan on August 9 may mark a turning point in public mobilisation against gender-based violence and systemic failure in Bengal.
